Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report 7/29/2010

The Middle Bay Region has been producing good numbers of fish with plenty of good size fish in the mix.

The Charter Boats have been finding large schools of Stripers - and going after them with the Summer toolbox of options - trolling, live lining with Spot, jigging and casting.

Now that the Bluefish are back in town, the trollers targeting Rockfish are moving to spoons or surgical hoses.  For spoons, Drones or the Tony Acetta Pets top the list.  For hoses, folks are using standard black or red surgical hoses trolled with varying the weights to cover a variety of depths.

We’re hoping to see some Spanish Mackerel around soon – spoons work great with these cruisers as well.

Fish are being caught all over - from Poplar Island to Rock Hall - the key is finding the schools.

Live lining has hit full stride as the small spot are easier to come by.  From what I've seen tossing a Spot into a school of breaking fish most often leads to a decent bluefish on the end of your line – to find the larger Stripers, you’ll need to go to deeper water or structure.

Now that the fish are schooling in the Main Bay and Eastern Bay, it’s a great time to catch some nice fish on lighter tackle.  Mixed schools of Blues and Stripers are breaking in the morning and evening.  Jigging through the scool or casting into the school is great fun - easy way to catch a quick limit.

Jigheads with Bass Assasins are the local staple when you can stay clear of the Bluefish.  If the Bluefish tear you up, switch over to metal jigging spoons.

Side note – the nasty storm that came through over the weekend caught a few folks by surprise – remember to keep an eye on the weather and know what might be coming before you head out - everyone stay safe out there.

Your Man with the Plan,
The "BASS ASSASIN",
