Captain C.D. Dollar has just opened Kent Island Kayaks. The new shop is located right next to the Hilton Garden Inn on Kent Narrows. Chris is a well know sports enthusiast and writer on the Eastern Shore. Check out his regular fishing column in Prop Talk Magazine. Chris already offers a kayak fishing charters. The store will offer a full line of serious kayak gear. You will also be able to rent our Cove Regional Series Jigging and Casting Rods at the store - good chance to check them out.

With Eastern Bay to the south and Chester River to the north, we're in the heart of rockfish waters. Master rod builder Billy O'Brien's Shore Tackle & Custom Rods, a full-service tackle store, is just a cast away as well.

We carry only high-quality kayaks, kayak accessories and equipment. Of course, our specialty is kayak fishing, though we also cater to the recreational and hunting paddler. Bring on the Fall

October is right around the corner. If the Chesapeake Bay offers her typical Fall bounty, we should see the top water fishing get even better in the Mid Bay area. We’ll start to see plenty of 25 inch Rockfish breaking throughout the area over the next couple weeks. .

The Spanish Mackerel will start to make their way south once the water temperature dips into the 60s and many of the Bluefish will follow the Anchovies out in October, but we’ll be left with plenty of larger Bluefish and some of the best Rockfish action of the year.

Top water action will also heat up in the shallows, particularly in the low light periods - early mornings and later evenings. Some effective top water plugs include Stillwater Smack-its or Atom Poppers.

Another option in October is to break out the trolling gear. We should start to good action on bucktails, tandem parachutes and Tsunamis as the water temperature starts to drop. We've got plenty of tandem rigs and Tsuanmis in stock.

Summer fishing can be a blast. but nothing beats a crisp Fall morning on the Bay.

Something Old, Nothing New, Something Borrowed, Something Plastic

I have fished live bait. I am not opposed to it, I just don't like it on my small boat. Maybe I am just a victim of obsessive compulsive disorder or as some of my buddies say “ a clean freak”. Perhaps I just enjoy the challenge of using artificial bait., whatever, enough psycho-analysis.
The following is a rig that I use for bottom fishing with light and ultra light tackle that has proven to be very effective for perch, croaker, stripers, blue fish, and whatever else may be looking for an easy meal on any given day.
The heart and soul of the rig is a two inch twister tail grub. I use either the Kalines Triple threat Bumble Bee pattern or the Berkley Power Bait Pumkinseed. The mentioned baits are my favorites but others would also be worth a try. The grub is attached to a 1/0 or smaller circle hook which has shown to be easy to remove and has a good hook up rate. The key here is to use a hook size that will fit the fishes mouth. Some circle hooks, by design are very large and do not allow the smaller fish's mouth to surround the bait.
Next on the agenda is line. I attach the circle hook to about 3 feet of 20 lb mono. Why so heavy? The 20 lb mono allows for handling the terminal end to land the fish and is a bit more abrasion resistant over structure such as oyster beds. The 20 lb line is attached to a three way swivel. The opposite end of the three way is attached the line spooled on the reel. I use 6- 8 lb test on lite and ultra light rods. On the remaining end of the swivel I attach a snap or clasp to secure a weight. This setup allows for easy weight removal and switching to accommodate drift speed and depth.
I fish this setup with St Croix Ultralight 5 foot spinning rod and a Light action baitcaster. These rods have excellent sensitivity and more than enough backbone to get the job done. The drag is set on these rods prior to attaching the terminal rig. The lighter action rods make for great sport and screaming dargs with this type of fishing. I have used up to an ounce of weight to keep these rigs down in a quick drift but generally a ½ ounce weight will suffice under most conditions. I have also used this type of rig with 1/8 and ¼ ounce weights to nab fish in the mid water depth.
It is an easy and inexpensive rig and certainly worth a try.

Welcome to Fish Talk

Bill, Jodie and a couple of our "local consultants" at Shore Tackle spent some time discussing the best format to provide folks interesting content on our favorite topic - the pursuit of great saltwater fishing in the Mid Atlantic area. We're lucky enough to have a good network of enthusiasts who are interested in writing about their successful tactics and techniques and willing to share a few experiences.

At the risk of looking technically savvy, we're going to use this blog type format to share some experiences, rigging tips and anything else that might be interesting. This format allows anyone to post comments - add on, question, or completely refute what has been said. As we work with captains to sketch out rigs for the Rig Right section, we'll put up a summary here so you can see what is new.

This site is all about sharing techniques and tips - and providing the right gear to help saltwater fishermen get set up right. If you are interested in posting an article, putting up some info on an upcoming event, or working us through a rigging set up, just post a comment and let us know.
